Riding Arenas are large areas of space which are fenced around the perimeter, they typically will have at least one gate to allow access in and out. Arenas can be either covered or open.
Covered Riding Arenas should have at least a 14'6 high clearance to the underside of the roof structure members. The side wall will typically have a canted rub rail around inside of structure at least 5 feet tall and open to the underside of the structure. The roof is a gable style on the front and back and low pitched to the sides.
The most crucial factor of a Riding Arena is the footing. Footing must be built up properly to assure the safety and well being of the horses which are being exercised. The sub grade must be firm and sound, crowned from the center to perimeter and the drainage controlled to assure the footing stability. When the sub grade is finished it should be build up in layers properly and topped with the final footing material cap.
There are many footing capping materials to consider . First you should consider cost and availabilty of material closes to you. Second would be how the arena is to be used. Third is preferance of available materials. Lastly, must be maintenance and life of footing material to be used.
